What You Do

Businesses and individuals hire freelancers for all kinds of small projects: proofreading, logo tweaks, social media posts, video edits, data entry, translation and website fixes. On marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr you either bid for posted jobs or list ready-made services that clients can buy.

What It Pays

  • You set your own rates, so what you earn depends on your skill, speed and reviews.
  • Upwork charges a Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. You see the exact figure before you accept an offer or send a proposal, and it stays fixed once the contract starts.
  • Fiverr: you earn 80% of each order, including extras and tips. Withdrawals carry their own small fees and minimums depending on the method, for example a $1 fee and $20 minimum for bank transfer via Payoneer.

How to Start

  1. Pick one service you can deliver well and quickly. Specific beats general.
  2. Build a focused profile with two or three samples of your work, even ones you make for practice.
  3. Price a little lower at first to win your first reviews, then raise your rates.
  4. Reply quickly, confirm exactly what the client wants, and deliver on time.
  5. Keep all messages and payments on the platform.

Good to Know

  • The platform’s payment protection only applies when you’re paid through it, and taking clients off-platform usually breaks the terms.
  • Beginner jobs are competitive: a narrow niche and strong first reviews make the biggest difference.
  • Freelance income is self-employed income, so keep records for tax.
