What You Do

Students and parents book online lessons for help with school subjects and exam preparation. You teach over video from home, usually one to one, and choose when you’re available.

What It Pays

  • MyTutor (UK) says its tutors take home from £13 to £120 an hour, with no experience needed. It recruits university students and recent graduates.
  • Wyzant (US): you set your own hourly rate and keep 75% of it, as Wyzant takes a 25% platform fee. For new students you refer yourself, you keep 100%.

How to Start

  1. Choose the subjects and levels you know best, ideally ones you did well in yourself.
  2. Apply on the platform’s own site. Expect some vetting before you’re accepted.
  3. Set your availability and, on Wyzant, your hourly rate.
  4. Prepare short plans for common topics so your first lessons go smoothly.
  5. Ask students and parents for reviews: they make a big difference to bookings.

Good to Know

  • Demand tends to rise ahead of exams, so bookings can be seasonal.
  • Tutoring income is self-employed income, so keep records for tax.
