Questions About Side Hustles
Do I pay tax on side hustle income?
In the UK, the first £1,000 of trading income each tax year is tax-free under the trading allowance, and you don’t need to tell HMRC about it. Income from land or property, such as a parking space, has its own £1,000 property allowance, and letting a furnished room in your own home is covered up to £7,500 a year by the Rent a Room Scheme. Go over these and you’ll need to tell HMRC. Since January 2024, online platforms may also report sellers’ details to HMRC.
In the US, if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, you need to file and pay self-employment tax, currently 15.3%. This is general information, not tax advice.
Do I need money to start?
Most of these cost nothing to join. The exceptions are small: TaskRabbit charges US Taskers a one-time $25 registration fee, and some side hustles use things you already have, like a spare room, a driveway or your own tools.
How much can I really earn?
It depends on your time, where you live and demand, so we don’t publish made-up income figures. We only quote rates and fees the platforms publish themselves, like Prolific’s minimum of £6 / $8 an hour or the 85% of each booking that UK Rover sitters keep.
Why don’t you list surveys or matched betting?
Survey and “get paid to” sites often pay in points worth pennies an hour, and matched betting and competitions rely on gambling or luck. We’d rather list fewer side hustles that pay properly in cash.
How do I avoid side hustle scams?
Sign up through the platform’s official website or app, keep messages and payments on the platform, and never pay upfront to “unlock” work. Be wary of anyone who asks you to move a chat or a payment somewhere else.
